John Standing Sings Noel Coward EXTRA DATES: WEDNESDAY 16TH – FRIDAY 18TH MAY 2012
Show Detail
Thu-17-May (7:00pm) - £25.00
John Standing Sings Noel Coward EXTRA DATES: WEDNESDAY 16TH – FRIDAY 18TH MAY 2012
Show Time 8:30pm / Doors Open 7:00pm

Accompanied by Stuart Barr on the piano & Nicola Davenport on double bass…A witty and affectionate selection of Coward's songs and poems, interwoven with his personal memories and reminiscences of ‘the Master'. John first met Coward when his mother, Kay Hammond, was starring with Coward in Blithe Spirit. The family connection has provided John with a plethora of stories about Coward and he tells tales from Coward's life with the authentic touch of someone who actually knew him. The show includes the classics, ‘Mad Dogs and Englishmen', ‘I've Been to a Marvellous Party', ‘The Stately Homes of England', ‘Don't Put Your Daughter on the Stage, Mrs.Worthington’.
“John Standing may be appearing in cabaret, but that hasn’t stopped him from delivering a master-class in acting in this program of Noel Coward songs. You’d have to look far and wide to find Coward performed with such effortless authenticity. In Standing’s hands the wit glistens, the irony stings, the characterization pops, and the sentiment seduces. This folks is how it’s done” (Backstage, New York).
“A voice like a shoe. Technically that may be true but you’d say the same of Rex Harrison whose style was similar though a bit more oratorical - in any case the shoe is made of the finest leather and moulded so perfectly to the contours of the foot, that it can be hardly felt when gliding around the floor” (New York Times).
“…Few are better qualified to tell the stories, recite the monologues and sing the classic numbers” (The Evening Standard****).
